In Aotearoa New Zealand, the risk from natural hazards is ever present. We sit on a major plate boundary, which means we live with the threat of damaging earthquakes and tsunami, and from numerous active volcanoes in and around Te Ika-a-Māui / the North Island. Climate change is increasing the frequency and severity of storms, flooding, drought and wildfires.
We’re developing detailed modelling of hazard scenarios involving earthquakes, tsunami, volcanoes, coastal hazards, severe weather and wildfires. We’re also modelling what happens when natural hazards trigger other hazards or occur at the same time by coincidence.
Our modelling and analysis provides a deeper understanding of hazards and impacts to guide decision-making and planning.
