Ngā Ākina o Te Ao Māori Empowering and Enabling Te Ao Māori
The Resilience Challenge is relatively early in its journey towards being a Te Tiriti-led organisation. In Phase 2 of the Challenge we are moving towards a deeper commitment supported by a range of actions. We are focusing our efforts on several areas including increasing Māori representation on our Governance Group and our science leadership team, enabling ‘by Māori for Maori’ kaupapa Māori research and mātauranga Māori activities, resourcing our mātauranga leadership efforts, and resourcing research participation by hapū to ensure our partners can participate in mana-enhancing ways.
We are connecting our Māori researchers with each other through the establishment of Te Rangapū Rangahau, and establishing engagement agreements for each of our mātauranga Māori projects. We are also building the capability of the Challenge Tāngata Tiriti to engage and communicate in ways that build relationships, enable participation on hapū terms, and ensures our research delivers meaningful benefits for those involved.
Te Rangapū Rangahau
Te Rangapū Rangahau is our collective of rangahau Māori (Māori researchers) who meet to wānanga, tautoko and collaborate on research and engagement activities. Te Rangapū is supported by Mātauranga Māori Knowledge Broker Hautapu Baker.
Ākina te Tū | Kaupapa Māori Engagement Fund
Our inaugural Ākina te Tū grants were handed out in 2021 to support Māori researchers and enable tangata whenua engagement in projects that are already underway within the Resilience Challenge.
Mātauranga Māori Knowledge Broker
Hautapu Baker (Ngati Porou, Te Aitanga a Hauiti) is our Mātauranga Māori Knowledge Broker. Hautapu works to support iwi and hapū engagement across our research programmes, and is supporting our wider Challenge whānau to upskill in our cultural capability. Hautapu convenes our Te Rangapū Rangahau cohort of Māori researchers.
Rauika Māngai
We are active supporters of the Rauika Māngai, a rōpū of representatives from across the National Science Challenges and Ngā Pae o te Māramatanga. Made up of Māori scientists, reseach leaders and programme managers, the Rauika Māngai is extending best practice approaches to Vision Mātauranga, innovating mātauranga Māori, and influencing Aotearoa science policy to extend the mātauranga continuum and deliver benefits for whanau, hapū and iwi. They have produced two excellent reports (below).
