Andy is Professor of Structural Geology at the University of Canterbury in the School of Earth and Environment. He studies earthquakes in Aotearoa New Zealand and overseas to understand better earthquake processes and hazards. His research interests include the 2016 Kaikōura and 2010 Darfield earthquakes, changes in earthquake behaviour in space and through time, quantification of sample incompleteness and seismicity induced by human activity. Andy has published over 240 research papers, book chapters and reports, and been awarded over 30 research grants. He collaborates widely with national and international colleagues on a broad range of research topics.
