Food systems security and disaster recovery

Resilience to Nature's Challenges (2024) Policy Brief: Food systems security and disaster recovery. Resilience to Nature's Challenges National Science Challenge, New Zealand. 10 p.

Abstract

Recent disasters in Aotearoa have affected food security across different communities. Food shortages may arise due to the disruption of supply chains, or may stem from communities being unable to access locally-produced food. This brief is designed for policy analysts as an outline of food security issues that may arise following a disaster. It encapsulates research from a wide variety of sources, detailing key findings from previous events including the Kaikōura earthquake and the Covid-19 lockdowns, as well as insights gained from interviews following the 2023 extreme weather events. The brief contains recommendations for policy change, as well as identifying areas where further research is needed.
