Building Urban Resilience in New Zealand: Lessons from our Major Cities.

Mannakkara S, Wilkinson S, Milicich M. 2017. Building urban resilience in New Zealand: lessons from our major cities. Auckland (NZ): Centre for Disaster Resilience, Recovery and Reconstruction. 90 p.

Abstract

This report looks at the state of resilience, and resilience gaps and challenges in 2017, in the seven biggest cities of Aotearoa New Zealand. This report aims to encourage learning, knowledge-sharing and collaboration between cities as we work together to make Aotearoa New Zealand more resilient. The findings will also help the Resilience National Science Challenge identify tools that need developing. The next step is to develop a collaborative resilience network between cities, starting with the cities addressed in this report. The resilience network aims to connect key people, projects, knowledge and experiences on a regular basis. This should facilitate open communication and a culture of collaboration allowing communities to work towards common resilience goals. This report evaluates the resilience progress of cities as they mature and develop their resilience practices. We recommended this report is updated in three years’ time.
