Our mission has been to accelerate our resilience to natural hazards through collaborative, innovative research.
In Aotearoa New Zealand, the risk from natural hazards is ever present. We sit on a major plate boundary, which means we live with the threat of damaging earthquakes and tsunami, and from numerous active volcanoes in and around Te Ika-a-Māui / the North Island. Climate change is increasing the frequency and severity of storms, flooding, drought and wildfires.
To achieve greater resilience in the face of these changing hazards, our planning, policy and investment choices should be informed by robust science. Broad collaboration across disciplines, knowledge systems, and between researchers and users, can ensure tools and recommendations are fit for purpose and useful for the Aotearoa New Zealand context.
